Celebrate New Year’s Eve in New York City
As the time slowly approaches midnight on December 31, millions of people will be lining the streets of New York City in the midst of confetti, kisses and cheering. Perhaps the greatest New Year’s Eve tradition since 1907 has been the ball drop in Times Square. The 1070 pound glittering crystal ball marks an event witnessed by viewers from all over the world and is then followed by a 1-ton explosion of confetti. For more active participation in New Year’s celebrations, join the hundreds of runners in Central Park (5th Ave. & 72nd St.) for the Emerald Nuts Midnight Run. It begins with a live DJ and dancing at 10p.m. and is followed by a costume contest, 4K run and an impressive fireworks display.
Many clubs, restaurants and hotels are also planning events in celebration of the New Year. Chic Parisian eatery Bryant Park Grille (25 W 40th St, 21 & up), hip restaurant 49 Grove (49 Grove St., 21 & up), and the meat packing district’s premier nightclub Tenjune are all hosting live DJs, great dining and champagne toasts at midnight. For a more subdued celebration check out performances at classic New York City venues like Patti Smith performing at The Bowery Ballroom, My Morning Jacket in Madison Square Garden, or Chuck Berry at B.B. King’s.
To get a taste of a little something extra, ring in the New Year on an NYC Harbor cruise including beer, wine, soft drinks, hors d’oeuvres, and a party atmosphere ($120/person; 21 & up; http://www.onboardnewyorktours.com/new-years-eve-cruise-in-new-york-city/). Get OnBoard!
